ABOUT THE LOCAL ORGANISER
Nottingham Trent University can trace its origins to 1843 with the establishment of the Nottingham Government School of Design which still exists within the university today. It is the 13th largest university in the UK with around 30,000 students split over four campuses. In 2018 The Complete University Guide placed Nottingham Trent as the top ‘post-1992’ University in the UK. The University was awarded the title of University of the Year at the 2017 Times Higher Education awards and the Modern University of the Year by the Sunday Times in the same year. In 2018 The Guardian placed Nottingham Trent as the 16th best university in the country.
The EATS conference 2019 will be hosted by The School of Arts and Humanities at Nottingham Trent University. The School is made up of four departments, including Journalism and Media, where Dr. Alexander has his lectureship. The department’s Head is Dr. Mark Dunford. Since 2015 the School has been led by the Dean, Angela Brown, who has developed a range of international partnerships including the opening of a small campus in Beijing at Communication University of China in 2016. The School offers BA undergraduate degrees, MA postgraduate taught and research degrees and PhDs to a multinational cohort of students in subjects including Media, Communications, Film and TV, History, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Global Studies, International Relations and a host of modern languages including Mandarin.

Conference sessions will occur in Lecture Theatre 1 and Lecture Theatre 4 in the Chaucer Building
Equipment and Internet Access
The conference rooms are all equipped with a PC and an overhead projector. Internet access will be provided (more details to follow in the 2nd Circular).
Submission of Draft Papers
We will circulate draft papers among participants in order to maximise floor discussion. Please submit your paper as a PDF or Word document by 31st March 2019 to firstname.lastname@example.org and cc email@example.com (subject: submission of SURNAME, given name). Late submission will affect the chances of obtaining travel grants and free hotel accommodation. Papers should not exceed the length of 7,000 words. Please do not change the title and/or abstract from what was accepted to the conference. Presenters for the MA panels do not need to submit full papers.
Travel Grant for Europe-based Students
PhD and MA students enrolled at a European institution are entitled to a travel grant up to €150 (one travel grant per paper). To claim your travel grant, please fill in the travel grant form that will be given out at conference registration and post with your ticket or e-ticket after the conference to:

Letter of Invitation
For those who need an invitation letter for their institution, please write to the local organiser Dr. Colin Alexander in the first instance.
Conference programme will be available on EATS website. We will inform by email when it is available. If there is any mistake about your name, title, affiliation, or paper title, please inform us at your earliest convenience.
Conference Dinner (Thursday 11th April 2019)
The conference dinner will take place in the Old Chemistry Theatre within the Newton Building on campus, starting with a drinks reception at 6.00 pm. The event will be hosted by the Taipei Representative Office in London with Representative David Lin in attendance. Due to funding restriction, only conference delegates (keynote speaker, paper presenters, chairs) are invited to this event. If you are one of the co-authors of a paper, please discuss between yourselves as we can only accommodate one Conference Dinner per paper. If your name is not shown in the Conference Programme but you would like to join the dinner, or you would like to invite your travel companion to join the dinner, you are more than welcome to purchase a dinner ticket of £55 (including reception, drinks, three-courses meal) when you register online and pay cash at registration desk.
Conference registration is to be completed on EATS website. Please complete your online registration by 28 March 2019 . Conference fees include conference registration, EATS membership, and/or subscription to the International Journal of Taiwan Studies (IJTS) (both membership and subscription are valid between 1 January and 31 December 2019). Delegates have several options as shown in the table below. Please specify your option when registering online. After submitting your registration, you wll receive an email which acknowledges your registration.
EATS strongly recommends delegates to acquire EATS membership for enjoying member exclusive benefits. These include obtaining discounted rates for conference registration and IJTS subscription, having access to past and present conference papers and eligibility for applying for the Library Grant, Young Scholar Award and Small Research Grant.
If you do not wish to acquire EATS membership or subscribe to IJTS, the above fees apply. Please note that the rates are significantly higher than the discounted rate for EATS members as shown above.

To celebrate EATS members’ scholarship, EATS will organise a book launch during the conference. If you have had a book relevant to Taiwan Studies published in 2017-18 and would like to take part in this event, please write to firstname.lastname@example.org (subject: EATS Book launch + your name) by 20 March 2019, including the following information: (1) bibliographical details of your publication, (2) one-paragraph abstract of your book and (3) image of the front cover or a picture of your book. EATS has agreed rates with two hotels in Nottingham: The Premier Inn on Goldsmith Street and the Premier Inn West at Phoenix Park tram stop. EATS has agreed a corporate rate with both hotels for 4 nights (check-in on Tuesday 9th April and check-out on Saturday 13th April). However, we understand that some delegates will not require the booking for this length of time. Delegates should make their own arrangements for accommodation for nights outside of these dates. Delegates can source their own accommodation if they so wish.
EATS will sponsor 1 night and 1 breakfast for each person who is a conference delegate (i.e. paper presenters, chairs), irrespective of whether the delegate occupies a single room or shares with another delegate. However, if you share with another delegate, the hotel will deduct 2 nights & 2 breakfasts from your total bill. If you stay in a single room or if you share with a non-delegate EATS will only deduct 1 night and 1 breakfast from your total bill. Each room costs £81 per night including breakfast for its occupants.
In a change to previous years, the hotels have asked us to coordinate guest requirements ourselves. Therefore, please email the local organiser, Dr. Colin Alexander email@example.com, with your accommodation requirements by 28th February 2019 deadline. Email title: EATS2019 ACCOMODATION: [your name]. In your email please state clearly your:
- First name
- Passport Number and country of citizenship (if not a British citizen)
- Nights of stay
- Type of room (double, single, sharing)
- The above details for the non-delegate also occupying your double room (if relevant)
- The name of the person you would like to share with (if relevant and agreed privately). Alternatively, the local organiser will allocate room shares.
Once delegates have provided this information to the local organiser they will be given individual details about how to pay for their accommodation via a private weblink to Nottingham Trent Universty’s online shop. Accommodation is being handled by Nottingham Trent University rather than EATS. We will look to fill the Goldsmith Street Premier Inn before filling the Nottingham West Pheonix Park Premier Inn as the former is located next to the University. Consequently, delegates are advised to contact the local organiser as soon as possible to begin the accommodation process as rooms are allocated on a first come first served basis.
Delegates staying at the Premier Inn West Pheonix Park can take the public tram to the Nottingham Trent University stop (approx. 15 minutes) on Goldsmith Street. The conference presentation rooms in Chaucer and Newton buildings are very close to the stop. To return to the hotel delegates should take the tram with destination Pheonix Park. The hotel is across the road from this stop. Tickets can be purchased at all tram stops. Delegates staying at Premier Inn West Pheonix Park are advised that the choice of nearby restaurants is limited. Therefore, eating in the city before returning to the hotel will likely lead to greater culinary satisfaction.

Delegates staying at the Premier Inn West can take the public tram to the Nottingham Trent University stop (approx. 15 minutes) on Goldsmith Street. The conference presentation rooms in Chaucer and Newton buildings are very close to the stop. To return to the hotel, delegates should take the tram with destination Phoenix Park.
From the Airport
Nottingham has good rail links to Birmingham (1hr 45mins) and Manchester airports (2hrs 15mins). Once arriving into Nottingham railway station, follow signs for the tram network (see above for appropriate tram stops). Alternatively, Nottingham Trent University City Campus is a 15 minute walk through the city centre from the station. Rail tickets are expensive in the UK if bought on the day of travel so delegates are encouraged to pre-book online. Tickets can be collected from machines at most rail stations in the UK.
Nottingham is also served by East Midlands airport. However, this airport tends to serve the holiday market rather than the business traveller. It may be worth checking if flights from your point of departure are convenient to East Midlands though. There are regular buses from East Midlands airport into the city centre. Taxis cost about £20+ depending on traffic.
On the evening of Wednesday 10th April there will be a film screening with a question and answer session with the film’s director. This is likely to begin around 5.30 pm after the completion of the day’s panels and other business and finish at around 7.30 pm.
A post-conference tour of Nottingham has been organised for the afternoon of Friday 12th April once conference proceedings have come to a close. More details about this will be included in the Second Circular.
As most delegates will already know, the climate in Britain is moderate and changeable with no excessive heat, cold or humidity. It has been known for it to snow in April but it could also be 20c or above. Normally the temperature is between 10 – 17c during the day at this time of year. Delegates are advised to bring a waterproof jacket and/or an umbrella.
