About the local organizer
The Department of Asian and North African Studies is one of eight departments at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. It was established at Ca’ Foscari in 1968 and it is presently the largest and one of the most distinguished departments in Italy that is involved in research and the dissemination of knowledge about Asia and North Africa. It is home to 55 faculty members, including professors, associate professors, senior lecturers and lecturers.
With reference to Chinese studies, the department’s research activities include the following areas: ancient Chinese language and thought, Buddhist studies, East Asian Philosophy, Chinese History, Manchu language and literature, Chinese linguistics, classical Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Taiwan literature and culture, translation studies, cultural studies, Chinese cinema and media, Chinese art, Chinese law and economy. The Department has also started in 2013 a Spotlight Taiwan Project dedicated to cultural activities related to Taiwan (mainly focused on literature, contemporary art, and cinema) with the funding of the Ministry of Culture of the R.O.C. (Taiwan).
The Department of Asian and North African Studies publishes the academic journal Annali di Ca’ Foscari - Serie orientale. Started in 1970, the journal became an Open Access resource in 2014. Its mission is to foster original and interdisciplinary research in the fields of Asian and North African Studies. Each annual issue features articles and reviews written either in Italian or in English by leading scholars whose contributions span across a vast array of topics, from linguistics to literature, from religions and philosophies to archaeology, from visual and performing arts to politics, and international relations.
The Department of Asian and North African Studies also publishes the book series Sinica venetiana devoted to studies on ancient, modern and contemporary China. It collects monographs and critical editions of texts related to culture, history, art, economics, politics, international relations, environment, using an interdisciplinary approach.

Format of the conference
No discussants are allocated in order to maximise floor discussion. Hence we would like to remind speakers that the format shall be:
- 45-50 min speech + 10-15 min discussion for the keynote session
- 15 min for each paper presentation + 30 min for panel Q&A
- MA panels have 10 min for each presenter + 30 min for panel Q&A
Equipment and Internet Access:
The conference rooms are all equipped with a PC and an overhead projector.
Internet access will be provided (more details about this will be available in the 2nd Circular).
Submission of Draft Papers
We will circulate draft papers among participants in order to maximise floor discussion.
Late submission will affect the chances of obtaining travel grants and free hotel accommodation.
Papers should not exceed the length of 7,000 words. We would be grateful if you do not change the title and abstract.
Presenters for MA panels do not need to submit full papers.
Travel Grant for European-based Students
PhD and MA students based at a European institution are entitled to a travel grant up to €150 (one travel grant per paper). To claim your travel grant, please fill in the travel grant form that will be given out during conference registration and post with your ticket or e-ticket after the conference to:

Letter of Invitation

A preliminary conference programme is attached to this email. If there is any mistake regarding you or your paper, please do not hesitate to let us know. We expect the preliminary programme to change, so please continue to follow its development on the EATS website for the latest version.
Conference Dinner (2 March 2017):
We are organising a formal Conference Dinner on 2 March 2017. However, due to the restriction of our budget, please understand that we can only pay for the conference delegate. If your name is not in the Conference Programme but would like to join us for the Conference Dinner, you are more than welcome to purchase a dinner ticket (€50) online. You can either register and pay for the ticket yourself or ask a conference delegate member to make the purchase for you. If you are one of the co-authors of a paper, please discuss between you as we can only accommodate one Conference Dinner per paper. For details of the online registration and ticket purchase system, please see the following sections.
Due to strict university rules, please note that we are not allowed to handle cash at the conference venues in Venice. Therefore, we are moving toward online registration (including EATS Membership fees, Conference Registration fees, and Conference Dinner ticket). The online registration system will be live via EATS website on 1 January 2017. Please complete your online conference registration by 22 February 2017 so that we can process your registration in time for the start of the conference on 2 March 2017.

To celebrate EATS members’ publications, EATS Board will organise a book launch during the conference. If you have had a book relevant to Taiwan Studies published in 2016–2017 and would like to take part in this event, please write to EATS Board member Isabelle Cheng (firstname.lastname@example.org; subject: EATS Book launch + your name) by 20 February 2017, including the following information: (1) bibliographical details of your publication and (2) one-paragraph abstract of your book. You are most welcome to display your book(s) or distribute leaflets during the conference. If you are a conference delegate, you would have received information from the organisers regarding hotel arrangements by emails. We kindly ask non-delegate to arrange your own accommodation. Please note that accommodation can be quite expensive in Venice as it is a very popular city for tourists. Moreover, guesthouses and hotels usually charge tourist tax, which amounts to €2-€4/pers/night.
In case you plan to arrive in Venice before the beginning of the conference, please consider that the days before 1 March 2017 are the last days of the Carnival period in Venice: the city can be very lively during this period, but also very crowded and the public transport can be quite messy. The guest houses have only limited number of rooms available for the night of 28 February (the last day of Carnival) and the prices can be higher than normal as it is peak season. Please arrange early to avoid disappointment.
A simple lunch is provided for each day of the conference. Tea/coffee/soft drinks and snacks will also be available for the scheduled coffee breaks (see the Conference Programme). Please note that food and drink is only catered for the participants who pay the Conference Registration fees to attend the conference.
A post-conference tour in the Venice lagoon will be organized. More details about this will be announced in the 2nd Circular.
