Most of the historical and social experiences of Taiwan’s past and present (its multiple colonial experiences, various cultural legacies, multicultural and multilingual reality) have brought into play different types of translation dynamics. Translation—a fundamental human activity for thousands of years—is usually considered as a practical act consisting in rendering a text in a different language. But our understanding of translation today has expanded. As Steiner points out, any mode of communication is also a mode of translation at the same time.
The 14th EATS conference aims at a broad definition of translation to examine transformations and adaptations in Taiwan. In other words, we see translation as a cultural interpretation and mediation that applies to scholarship in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. We thus invite papers that address the conference theme from all disciplines. While some may wish to tackle the theory and practise of translation in relation to Taiwanese literature, cinema and arts, others may use the concept of translation to focus on the island’s social and political reality. In particular, as 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of February 28th Incident and the 30th anniversary of the lifting of martial law, we hope the conference will be an opportunity to subject Taiwan’s political, social, cultural, historical and artistic development to fresh scrutiny and interpretation.
Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.
For submission, please send an abstract of 500 words (including 3–5 keywords in Word Document), together with a separate page indicating your first name, surname, affiliation, status (i.e. Faculty, MA, PhD, Researcher), gender and email contact to info@eats-taiwan.eu (subject: abstract of SURNAME, Given Name) and cc. adina.zemanek@eats-taiwan.eu by 14 August 2016. After a double blind review process, we will announce the successful submissions by 30 November 2016.
To nurture junior researchers at their formative stage, EATS will organize MA panels for students to practice their presentation skills and to receive critical feedback. The MA panels are not confined by the theme of the conference, although it should be relevant to the broadly defined field of Taiwan Studies. For the submission to MA panels, please send an abstract of 300-500 words on a topic of your choice together with a separate page indicating your first name, surname, affiliation, gender and email contact to info@eats-taiwan.eu(subject: MA abstract of SURNAME, Given Name) and cc. adina.zemanek@eats-taiwan.eu by 31 October 2016. After a double blind review process, we will also announce the successful submissions by 30 November 2016.
Accepted postgraduate presenters (PhD and MA students) who are affiliated with European institutions, or the 2017 Young Scholar Award finalists, will receive a travel grant of 150 euros.
