 Abstract:

The workshop “Historical Legacies of Taiwan Culture: A Cinematic Approach” is a one-week intensive seminar (equivalent to one semester course) instructed by prominent European and Taiwanese scholars and aimed at graduate students studying at different universities in Europe. The workshop uses the historical movie “1895” (released in 2009, with English subtitles) as a starting theme around which lecturers can organize material and topics in their area of expertise in Taiwan Studies. The emphasis of the workshop is on Taiwanese culture with a special focus on film, although the workshop will also deal with Taiwan history, ethnicities and multiculturalism, religion, the women’s movement, socio-linguistics and law (for details see the enclosed program). The aim of the workshop is to promote Taiwan Studies among Eastern and Western European graduate students from Chinese Studies and other fields and provide a methodological basis for their further research and study. The uniqueness of this project is the large number of prominent scholars gathered together to discuss Taiwan-related topics currently not available at the majority of European institutions.

 Students:

The workshop is designed for graduate students (MA and Ph.D study programs) in Chinese/Asian Studies who have a research interest in Taiwan. Drawing from European universities, the workshop will host a maximum of 30 students.
